MICAH’S Vision and Mission
MICAH envisions a metropolitan area where everyone, without exception, has a safe, decent, accessible, and affordable home.

Who is MICAH?
We are Faith leaders, housing advocates and affordable housing developers. Metropolitan Interfaith Council on Affordable Housing (MICAH) was founded in 1988 in response to an accelerating homeless crisis. Our strength comes from bringing together people of faith to act on their values to support affordable housing, undo racism and build regional equity.

What does MICAH do?
MICAH works with congregations, faith leaders, and community partners to increase awareness and understanding the need for affordable housing. This creates advocates who fight for changes in public policies to encourage all communities to preserve and build affordable housing.

Through MICAH, congregational leaders and faith leaders, build relationships and organize within their congregations, community and region. These relationships, within a strategic framework, generate the power, commitment, and action that creates the political will to realize our vision.

Living Out the Mission

MICAH has built relationships, established ourselves as an affordable housing resource, given decision-makers essential guideposts against which to make sound choices, built our credibility at the local level, and developed a history of affordable housing campaign victories including:

  •   5500 families have an affordable home because MICAH leaders spoke up of their development or preservation.
  •   20% set-aside policy. Minneapolis housing policy now guarantees that all new housing development with 10 or more units will set aside 20% of those units as affordable. It also targets the city’s housing dollars to individuals earning below 50% of the metropolitan median income (MMI).
  •   27 land use plans have been strengthened to reduce regulatory barriers to affordable housing, including inclusionary zoning, increased housing densities, and reducing development fees.
  •   In coalition, we increased state appropriations by $52 million for affordable housing programs.
  •   We increased local investment in affordable housing by supporting the Minneapolis Housing Trust Fund and incentive funds in Anoka, Dakota, Hennepin and Ramsey counties.

At MICAH our most important function is to make possible the empowerment of many by growing the numbers of leaders for action and growing the number of congregations committed to affordable housing.

The Ibo tribe in Nigeria have a proverb that says, “It is the heart that gives; the fingers just let go.”

Giving is something that only the heart can do. The heart knows that all belongs to all so when we live from the heart, we are free to give without fearful clinging.
